Ashtanga Yoga, also known as Raja Yoga or the Royal Path to salvation, was described by Maharshi Pathanjali, about 5000 years ago. The basic idea of the authentic Ashtanga Yoga, is to follow certain rules to discipline the mind (Yamas and Niyamas), to prepare the body for meditation by training the body to be effortless in all postures (Asanas), to regulate breathing pattern (Pranayama), to withdraw the senses from the outside to within (Pratyahara), and then to meditate (Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi) in order to seek answers , attain wisdom and finally to reach salvation.

But the trend that has caught up in the modern world is the Ashtanga Vinyasa style of practice which has come to be known as the Ashtanga Yoga . Ashtanga Vinyasa was described by Vamana Rishi in his compilation, Yoga Korunta. Ashtanga Yoga (Vinyasa ) style emphasizes on the co-ordination of bodily movements with breathing, and it consists of a series of asanas performed in succession with emphasis on inhalation or exhalation . The reason Ashtanga Yoga (Vinyasa )has become so popular is because it trains the mind to focus on the present. This is because Ashtanga Yoga in Vinyasa style demands a high level of bodily co-ordination, stamina and breathing control. The class is however, ended by complete relaxation of the body in corpse posture. If we practice Ashtanga Yoga (Vinyasa) regularly, our mind automatically learns to focus in the present, our breathing becomes calm irrespective of the circumstances, and the body is relaxed and balanced atall times.
